Drifta Trailer Kitchens
Drifta has recently designed four different types of kitchens specially to suit camping trailers. When I started designing them, I had a number of characteristics in mind.
.....ONE - they had to be of the same robust construction as all our Drifta products, guaranteed to be able to withstand the rough conditions in the back of a 4WD camping trailer. We only use quality Australian marine and exterior hoop ply, with every joint glued with a water resistant finger jointing glue, and pre-drill screwed. They are unconditionally guaranteed in durability and strength. Also, the advantage with using timber is that the kitchens are very light for their size, and allows us to create designs that aren't possible with other heavy materials like steel. You can pay up to $2000 for a pull out steel kitchen thats fixed to the trailer, weighs a ton and has hardly any bench space. Some of them come with stainless tops, but really there isn't any need for this expense.
.....TWO - they had to be of exceptional design, utilising unique patented fold out designs to create bench space - the trademark of all Drifta Kitchens, and the most important feature of any kitchen, whether at home or in the bush. If you're planning on a camping trailer holiday for a few weeks, try spending the same time at home cooking, preparing and washing up on a two foot square card table. Thats how tricky and unorganised it will be if you don't have a properly designed trailer kitchen. All four Drifta trailer kitchens have been designed to create maximum bench space and flexibility, all with laminated upper surfaces.
.....THREE - The kitchens needed good drawers, the next most important feature of a kitchen. All Drifta Trailer Kitchens can fit two to three light, easy to slide drawers. They also needed to be able to fit up to a three burner stove. All Drifta Trailer Kitchen designs allow for a standard gas three burner stove to fit comfortably. They can be modified to suit most other stoves.
.....FOUR - they had to be able to freestand away from the trailer if needed. This created the most challanging design problem we had faced. The legs had to fold away, they had to be fully adjustable, and they had to be very strong. With nothing else on the market to compare to, I went through a series of several different designs, which eventually led to the patent pending set of Drifta Folding Legs. Made from galvanised tubing, every leg is fully adjustable with a thumbscrew up to 300 mm. They can be left to a preset height so each time they are folded down, it is the correct height. All joins are mig welded and sprayed with gal paint. Once folded down, the Drifta Folding Legs are locked into position with the Angle Brace, giving them unparalled strength for a large portable kitchen. These freestanding designs allow you to use the kitchens anywhere around the camp, not just off the back of the trailer.
....FIVE - they had to have a practical way of washing up. I stayed away from a built in sink, apart from being very expensive (whats the difference in washing up in a $300 dollar stainless sink, or a $3.00 plastic tub ) the bowl areas are often quiet small, and there was the problem of waste water and inlet water. Also they waste a lot of useable bench space. (it takes a lot longer to prepare and cook a meal than to wash up, and you can wash up with a tub on your bench, but you can't prepare meals in the sink. ) So I designed a roll out draw on runners, with the sink sitting on top, directly under the hand pump. You can slide it out of the way when not in use, or remove the sink and wash up on the bench.
....SIX - I had to have a flexible range to suit the different types of trailers , from drop down to swing out tailgates, from professionally built trailers to home made, from left to right hand opening tents/tailgates, from couples to large families. We have currently in our range four types, all can be modified within reason to suit various trailer heights etc. Here are the four designs I came up with. Please give us a call or e-mail if you have any questions about the new Drifta Trailer Kitchens.

DSO is designed to bolt onto the swing out tailgate of camper trailers, either left or right hand opening. It's very simple to use, and still creates lots of bench space. Top surfaces are laminated, and it comes with sink and pump, and one draw. Underneath the unit are two plastic skids, which are designed to ride onto the floor of the trailer when closed, so the weight of the kitchen is sitting on the floor, not hanging off the tailgate when travelling. |

The DPOS is a shorter version of the DPOR. This model was really designed to fit across the width of a trailer. For example it is the same size as the DSO, but is freestanding, and has a bit more bench space. Also great for tent camping, if you can fit it in your vehicle, say ute or troopy. |

Folded out in about twenty seconds, the DPOS creates loads of bench space. |

If you're considering a Drifta Trailer Kitchen, there's a few
things I need to know to make sure your kitchen fits your trailer.
1.. the type of tailgate, either drop down or swing out, which way it
opens, and which way the tent folds out. (this decides whether it's a LHS or
RHS)
2.. height of the opening of the tailgate ( our kitchens as standard
need a minimum opening of 440mm, but they
can be cut down say for the Cavalier trailers which has a opening of 425mm on
some trailers. )
3.. the type and make of the trailer.( ie, if its an TRACKABOUT OFF ROAD,
or an on road Redback. )
Our kitchens will fit these 'soft floor' camper trailers. Trackabout Offroad Campers , Redback, Clarkes Country Campers, Bell Canvas, Heavysew, Complete Campsite, Coolabah, Ace Trailers, Coastal, Cameron, Jumbuck, Wallaby, Cavalier, Tru Blu, Outback, Universal, Southern Cross, Penninsula , All Terrain , Built Tough, 3 Dogs, Simon Heard, Dingo, Walkabout, Traralagon, Customline etc, which is basically all the standard 6 x 4, or 7 x 4 box trailer type campers.
Drifta kitchens won't fit in the 'hard floor' type campers such as -T-van, Kimberly, Campamatic, Cub, Pioneer, Ultimate, and Aussie Swag, although in the older models without kitchens we have fitted a aluminium box on the drawbar and a modified DPOS can fit inside.
Thanks for your interest. rgds Luke the Drifta

| FOLDED UP
- The Drifta Camping Kitchen
works as a compact, robust storage unit, holding all your cooking and
kitchen gear. A gas stove fits in the top, the draw below can hold all your
cutlery and small handy items such as black tape, spare mantles or a pair
of pliers. Under that is a shelf that can hold plates and cups. The next
two shelves can store billies, frying pans, washing up tub, Drifta gas light
box, telescopic gas light stand and anything else you need to carry.
FOLDED OUT - The Drifta folds out in about 30 seconds.(see SETTING UP) You now have over two meters of top bench space, central stove, garbage bag, draw, shelves - a complete kitchen! Your gas bottle can fit on one of the side shelves, or on the ground. At night a telescopic light stand can be fitted to the gas bottle to have a light directly over your cooking station. The Drifta 300 stands about 860 high, which is nearly standard kitchen height. No more bending over to wash up or prepare your meals. CONSTRUCTION - The Drifta is constructed with Australian B.B grade marine ply. It has been pinned, glued and screwed making it extremely robust. It is coated with a clear industrial lacquer that forms a tough wipeable finish. Every Drifta is individually handcrafted ,and each has it's own construction number, corresponding to the order in which it was made, starting from the first box I built in 1995, and is signed and dated under the draw. MODIFICATIONS - We do a lot of modifications, mainly to drop the shelf down for a stove with the griller, or for the coleman range of dual fuel stoves, or extra drawers, extra height etc. DELIVERY
- Drifta's can be posted
anywhere in Australia, and are sent either with Aust. Post or a freight
company. They are wrapped in bubble wrap and cardboard and sent registered
and insured. We usually have Drifta's in stock anytime and delivery takes
about 3 days. Price for postage and handling depends on location, but
as a quide- PAYMENT - can be made cheque, credit card, direct deposit or Money order. See contacts for details to arrange delivery or payment. All prices are subject to change and are in Aussie dollars, including GST.
