DOT Frequently Asked Questions

DOT-Frequently-Asked-Questions02CAN YOU MATCH RIMS AND TYRES ON THE DOT TO MY VEHICLE..

Yes no worries.. to a point… we can always match the rim size, stud pattern and offset… this then determines the axle length.. ie some rims have a positive 30 mm offset, some have a zero, so this is a 60 mm difference in axle length) … the axles are always ordered and made to size, for each trailer, depending on the offset..

If you don’t mind/ don’t need to match offset, or are changing vehicles, then we can just do a standard common offset, ie suit a ford ranger, which will suit several common vehicles..

The tyres… we put a standard 16 inch tyre on, 245/75/16.. (for those that don’t know, this means 245 mm wide, 75 % of the width is the height, in this case 184 mm, on a 16 inch rim… ) we can go up to a 265/75/16, and in some cases 285/75/16 .. these are a 33 inch as are commonly called, but are getting a bit too big for a trailer.. 33’s are becoming common on some vehicles now, but it puts a lot of pressure on axle/ hub, and on vehicles, a lot of pressure on the steering components.. they are too big really to go on say a ford ranger.. you can put them on, but will have steering, alignment issues.. so… can put a 33 on, but it will make the trailer sit higher, and it’s already high enough… any 245, 265 tyre is fine..

We are using an Achilles MT (mud terrain) tyre, they are very good quality, and have a very thick sidewall.. also the MT tread, provides a deeper tread to say an AT (all terrain) , so better puncture protection.. but as a 16 inch, they are a good price, once you go to 17 inch, say prado, and many new vehicles, then they are more expensive… no real reason why, they just are, 16’s are much more common, or were, so 17’s cost more.. that’s why we have to add about $200 extra for a 17 inch tyre.. (rim is same price, and keep in mind there is three new tyres per trailer) .. now , also, Achilles don’t make a 17 in MT, only XMT, which is ‘extra mud terrain’ , so these have a slightly chunkier grip again, and more side wall ‘biters’ so more grip on the sidewall.. on a trailer, grip means nothing, a AT does the same job, trailer don’t need traction.. but, we use the MT and XMT because they have stronger sidewall, thicker grip both offering better puncture protection.. and they also look great.. nothing looks worse on an offroad trailer than an AT tyre..

If you want your own brand tyres, say mickey Thompson, coopers etc, then we can’t buy them at a good price.. the tyre industry is a very protected in terms of who can buy from who.. not many people are supplying their own tyres, but if you want to, then best to buy online, (you can get most good brands online, often with free freight) get them sent here as we need them during construction (no good turning up with them when you pick up the trailer) and we’ll discount your invoice by the amount we allow for tyres.. usually around $650…

So yeah there is some things to think about… any other questions, let me know.. : ) Luke

WHAT IS THE CURRENT LEAD TIME..

At the moment, start may 2015, we have about a 8-10 week lead time from deposit to finished trailer.. this is just an estimate.. could be a few weeks earlier, could be a few weeks later.. but if we get a deposit, we can give a firmer delivery/ completion date..
